What the anime was really about is the interaction of humans and technology at the end of the 20th century, in the anime this great change in human life is presented with the wired mixing with reality.
It's probably that one piece media of media that expresses this concept best and one of the most relevant medias to our present day(present time ahah), but what really made it incredible is that it predicted a lot of things about the internet at a time when it was all very early.
I think it's an anime that either you watched in early 2000's or it loses a lot of its charm cause people are too used to the internet just being a part of their life these days.
There's more to it like the spiritual elements but I can't be bothered to write cause thread is already kuso.
