To what extent are the Internet arguments about 0.999... legitimate, and to what extent is it just people being contrarian?

I think there is too much information in the ellipses.
iff 0.999... = 9/9 = 1 then 0.999... = 1.

so I guess
0.999... = 0.9/0.9 = a/a = 1, a\neq{0}
