A certain imageboard is having a hard time stopping BBC fetishists from hiding extra data in their image files. How would you, the warden, go about designing an imageboard where it was as difficult as possible to hide secret messages?

Maybe we could start with God's requirements:
>640x480 resolution
>16 colors

And of course no metadata. But users would still pass hidden messages disguised as random dithering. Perhaps a strict limit on filesize after compression would help. You'd still need human inspection to check that the images actually looked like pictures of something.

Or would a better approach be to add so much noise and distortion that no hidden signal could hope to get through? Reposts would start to look very bad, though.

A texboard? Images could be shared through temporary services who retain images only for few hours, days, etc.
Are you sure there is something in that noise?

Passing the non-problem to someone else could be a great solution. As I recall the first Japanese imageboard operated this way, and there was an anontalk clone that used imgur for image hosting. Of course the biggest obstacle to a large imageboard delegating image hosting to someone else would be finding a site willing to put up with its level of traffic, for free. It would probably have to be imgur since it managed that same sort of relationship with reddit.

Still, this solution only works if the warden is willing to give up some measure of control. The warden doesn't like giving up control, and might be more inclined to ban external links. After all, any external link might contain child pornography or even wrong opinions, and we certainly can't have the warden looking at links to see what they actually contain.

(For those who don't know, the autistic war referenced in OP is between [spoiler: https://coom.tech/] and [spoiler: 4chan]. It's a non-problem in my view but could be fun to think about.)

Come to think of it, TempleOS has some sort of mechanism for embedding images in text files, doesn't it? A board using its format might be kind of interesting.

I don't think there would be a problem if you pick a less than 1 day period service. With onion image boards there is not a lot of traffic to begin with, and link can be easily reported by posters below. As much i am for freedom, the absence of pornographic and loli images is a very lucrative feature many boards lack.
>non-problem
If you speak about darknet, then this is indeed a non-problem, but eventually it will be delegated to problem mods who will powertrip. I don't think a textboard would a terrible solution.

It is extremely unlikely that the warden would allow Tor users to post to his site. His entire goal is to prevent secret communication. The inability to rangeban users who get caught sending secret messages would be an unacceptable disadvantage.

There is no point in clearnet imageboards in these dark times.

The point of the board is for the warden to power trip. The point of considering it is to imagine how this warden would run his board to prevent secret messages from being passed, and figure out whether his extreme methods would be effective or whether the users would pass secret messages anyway. We're not trying to design a site that's good for its users. Or maybe you are, but that wasn't the original idea of the thread.

An image is either good or bad(according to the "warden"). Managing that is a matter of scale. Maybe some auto-filters using perceptual hash. If a good image has secret data inside of it, it doesn't matter.

That's always the excuse for crackdowns on steganography (meaning banning people from talking about it). And it exists. But in practice it's more common to find BBC porn, anime songs, books, and other stuff.
